Let’s face it! You want to get that photo of YOUR child. That personality smile you see when their eyes light up, and they have a nice belly laugh. It’s hard! It’s hard to say look here and give me all that personality so I can put it in a photo and remember it forever. I’ve photographed hundreds of kiddos, and sometimes you just can't crack into playfulness. BUT,  I’ve noticed a few things that help get them to lose up in front of the camera... You don't need a fancy camera, honestly most smart phones have some amazing camera's and can capture some pretty great photos to print and be able to look back on.

Here are 5 tips below to help get you some true smiles and maybe even a belly laugh too...

This little guys has a beautiful smile. This is me saying "look here, and smile". It's a canned smile, not much personality behind it, and as his Mom I know its not genuine and truly him...

Here are a few different ways I get my little ones to open up in front of the camera...

1.     Get on the same level. If they are playing, get down to where they are playing. No one likes someone standing over them or far away from them telling them to smile. If the lighting in the area they are playing is poor, find them a stool to stand on and make it a game to "stand up on here like it's a big mountain"

2.    Avoid telling them to say cheese. It’s a classic “I am taking your photograph, act happy" phrase. Ask them a question. “What are you playing with?” “Are you playing with your doll?” …”super hero” ….”bear” whatever it is, connect with them and what they are doing. Ask what kind of sound their toy makes? "What does your doll sound like when she is happy?" "What sound does your dinosaur make?"

3.     Don’t be afraid to get silly! What inappropriate thing makes your kids laugh? A goofy face? Crossing your eyes? Making a fart noise? I am totally serious! Do it! Kids love seeing Mom and Dad be silly, and you’re sure to get a little giggle out of them.

4.   Compliment them. We as adults love compliments. And we typically smile when we are complimented by someone, right? Your kids do too! Simply complimenting their smile, their hair or outfit, can get a smile too. "Wow, you look beautiful! You look just like princess ---" "Oh look at that cool shirt you have on!" "Wow, you look so big and strong like -----"

5.     Pop away from the camera or phone. Stepping away from the camera for a second so YOU can connect with them will help them relax. If your phone or camera is right in front of you the whole time, they will lose interest and you will in turn lose that connection from them you want in your picture.

This is my little guy again after engaging with him...I know this is him. This is his happy smile...
